The Battle of Saratoga was one of the most important events in the history of the struggle for American independence. The battle, which took place from September 19 to October 7, 1777, was of great importance for the further course of the American Revolution. It is worth presenting the role of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish national hero, in this historic battle.

Kościuszko arrived in America in July or August 1776. However, we do not know the exact date. The war was already on. The Declaration of Independence has been announced. However, the course of war events was not very favorable for the rebellious colonists.

Having not been paid in his seven years of service, in late May 1783, Kościuszko decided to collect the salary owed to him. That year, he was asked by Congress to supervise the fireworks during the 4 July celebrations at Princeton, New Jersey.

The strengthening and defense strategy of the banks of the Hudson River from the very beginning of the war, i.e. from 1775, preoccupied George Washington’s head. The natural choice was the rise of West Point, because the river here narrows and bends sharply, breaking through the Hudson Higlands – rocky slopes and hills.
