Tadeusz Kościuszko leaves his native Poland to join the American Revolution. An accomplished military architect, he serves as a Colonel in the Continental Army under Major General Horatio Gates. When General John Burgoyne and his Redcoats force the Americans to abandon Fort Ticonderoga, Tadeusz and his men fell trees, dam streams, and destroy bridges to protect their retreat. Exposed and vulnerable, the Americans need to find a defensible position between the two armies to build fortifications. Kościuszko constructs a robust array of defenses at Bemis Heights, putting the British at a tactical disadvantage during the Second Battle of Saratoga. Surrounded and outnumbered 3-to-1, General John Burgoyne surrenders to Gates. Inspired by this news, France formally recognizes the United States and enters the war, turning the tide of the American Revolution… thanks, in part, to the ingenuity of Tadeusz Kościuszko.
